The Decksmith · Eastern Suburbs Sydney
Every deck I've ever built has been designed, framed, and finished by my own hands. That's not a limitation — it's the point.

The story
My father owned the largest chain of retail hardware stores in South Africa. I grew up in those stores — surrounded by power tools, timber, and people who built things. I got an industrial lathe for my birthday at eleven years old. Building wasn't a hobby I picked up. It was the language I grew up speaking.
I spent my thirties in the corporate world — building and running medium and large businesses. I was good at it. But somewhere along the way I realised I was spending my days hunched over a desk doing something I tolerated, when I could be outside in the sun doing something I loved. So I made the call. I walked away from the boardroom and started building decks.
I haven't looked back once.
What I didn't expect was how much the name would matter to me. My brother suggested The Decksmith early on, and something about it resonated immediately. The -smith tradition — blacksmith, goldsmith, wordsmith — carries a weight that the word "builder" simply doesn't. A smith is someone who has put in the time. Who has earned their craft through years of hard, exacting work until the skill becomes instinct.
The honest truth? In those early years, as much as I loved the work, I didn't feel I'd yet earned the name. A decade of building will fix that — and it did. Hundreds of decks, pergolas, and outdoor spaces later, personally built from first concept to final clean-up, I can say without hesitation: I've earned it.
"When someone chooses The Decksmith, they don't get a company. They get the craftsman whose name is on the business — start to finish."
Why it matters
Most building businesses grow. They hire teams, take on more jobs, and the founder moves from the tools to the office. I chose a different path — deliberately, and from day one.
The reason I left corporate life was because I wanted to spend my days doing something I love. If I scaled up to managing crews, I'd just be running another business. I'd lose the thing that makes this work worth doing. So I kept it intentional: me on your project, personally, from site visit to final handover.
That means every decision about framing, materials, layout, and finish gets made by the person who actually cares about the outcome — not delegated to whoever's available that week. When you call to ask a question, you're talking to the person who built it.

From the first measure to the final sweep-up, you deal with me. No handoffs, no miscommunications between a salesperson and a build crew, no surprises.
I've been building things since I was a kid. My internal benchmark isn't "does it pass inspection" — it's "would I build this on my own home?" Those are very different standards.
Your quote reflects the actual complexity of your project. Once agreed, that's the number. I'd rather quote properly upfront than have a difficult conversation halfway through a build.
I've been building across Sydney's Eastern Suburbs for over 15 years. I know the access challenges, the coastal conditions, and the finish standards this area expects.
If composite isn't right for your site, I'll tell you. If a different layout would serve you better, I'll suggest it. The goal is an outcome you'll love — not a sale I can close quickly.
Because I built it, I know it. If something comes up after the job is done, you're talking to the person who built it — not navigating a call centre.
