The Decksmith

This Vaucluse job started with a full strip-out. The existing Merbau deck and frame were tired, along with the pool storage, the pool-side seating, and the shower wall — all needed to come off before anything new went in. I also rebuilt the bin enclosure at the front of the house while I was on site. Everything went back in Millboard Antique Oak, built on a new frame from the ground up.

The Frame

Vaucluse deck demolition — existing Merbau deck and frame stripped back to brick and bearer
New deck frame complete, Vaucluse, ready for Millboard Antique Oak decking
Footing detail, Vaucluse deck rebuild, signed and dated in concrete
Deck frame levels checked to 0.00 degrees before decking, Vaucluse

This section of deck sits directly over exposed rock face. Standard bearers wouldn’t work here, so I engineered aluminium bearers with Lowdeck joists to get a level, stable frame over the stone. I cut drainage points at the low spots in the rock itself, so water clears instead of pooling under the deck — a common failure point on jobs like this if it’s not planned for at frame stage.
