Millboard Decking Sydney: Review and Install Notes
What Millboard Is
Millboard is a UK-engineered composite decking product. Boards are mould-formed from hand-selected oak timber moulds, so the grain reads like real hardwood rather than the flatter, extruded look of most composite lines.
What Makes It Different
That moulded face is the point of difference. Each board carries unique grain. On a finished deck — especially beside stone, pool water, or a coastal backdrop — it is the finish people assume is timber until they touch it.
Performance
Millboard is fully waterproof through its core, does not splinter, and resists staining, mould, and algae growth. That matters on shaded or low-airflow decks where some composites get slippery.

Installed Millboard in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs is typically around $1,000–$1,100/m² depending on variables — access, height, stairs, detailing, and the rest of the build. That is one complete installed figure, not a materials-only line and not a breakdown essay. I confirm the number on a consultation once I have seen the site.
Millboard vs WPC or PVC Decking
Most wood-plastic composite (WPC) and PVC decking is extruded — a consistent, reliable board with a more uniform look. Millboard is different in process: boards are mould-formed from timber masters, so the grain reads closer to real hardwood, and the core is fully waterproof. I specify Millboard when that moulded look and waterproof core matter on the job. Extruded WPC or PVC remains a solid choice when a cleaner, more uniform finish or a sharper price point is the better fit. Same broad composite family — different manufacturing route and finish class.
Pools and Coastal Suitability
The Clovelly pool deck above is the practical proof. Waterproof core, no splinters under wet feet, and a surface that holds up around splash and coastal air when the substructure and fall are right. I design pool-edge and coastal Millboard installs for slip risk, drainage, and fixings that stay warranty-clean — not just the board colour.
Warranty
Millboard carries a manufacturer product warranty on the boards. Install method matters: wrong joist centres, the wrong fixing system, or poor acclimation can put that warranty at risk. I install to Millboard’s system so the product warranty sits on a frame and fixing layout that supports it. Licence 272840C.
Install Notes From The Decksmith
After 13+ years building decks across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, this is the practical side I care about on Millboard jobs:
- It is not a drop-in for standard composite spacing — Millboard wants its own substructure centres and fixing system.
- Acclimate boards on site before you commit lines; rushing shows later in gaps and end cuts.
- Picture-framing, stairs, and hatch detailing need planning up front — that is where Millboard looks expensive or looks intentional.
- Getting the system wrong hurts appearance and can affect warranty. Getting it right is why Weathered Oak in Vaucluse and Coppered Oak in Clovelly still read as timber at a glance.
