What Drives Pergola Pricing
Pergola cost comes down to four factors: material (timber vs aluminium vs steel), roof type (open lattice, louvred, solid), size, and site complexity — sloped ground, existing structures to tie into, council requirements. Two pergolas that look similar in a photo can differ significantly in price once these variables are accounted for.
Material Cost Ranges
Timber pergolas sit at the lower-to-mid end of the cost range and suit a traditional look, but require ongoing maintenance — oiling or staining every year or two in Sydney’s UV and salt air conditions.
Aluminium pergolas cost more upfront but need almost no maintenance and hold their finish for decades. Louvred aluminium roofs — adjustable for sun and rain — sit at the top of the range because of the moving mechanical components.
Steel-framed pergolas fall between the two, offering strength for larger spans without the aluminium price premium, but they need protective coating to handle coastal conditions.

Size and Site Factors That Add Cost
Attaching a pergola to an existing wall is generally cheaper than a free-standing structure, since you save on posts and footings on one side. Sloped blocks, sandstone underfoot, or existing structures nearby (retaining walls, pools, easements) all add labour and can require engineering sign-off, which adds to both cost and timeline.
Do You Need Council Approval
Many pergolas in NSW qualify as exempt or complying development depending on height, size, and proximity to boundaries — but not all. Get this confirmed before you commit to a design, not after a quote’s been accepted. A specialist builder should flag this at the site visit, not leave you to find out from the council later.
