Can My Deck Hold a Pool, Spa, or Big Planters? A Sydney Builder’s Guide

There are really only two spa enquiries I get. The first is from someone who’s bought a new spa and wants a deck built around it. The second is from someone who’s pulled out an old spa they never used and wants a deck where the pit used to be. Both calls are about the same thing underneath the question — what can a deck actually carry, and what do you have to do under the boards to make it work.

After 500+ decks across Sydney, the short answer is: most things, if the frame is built for it. The longer answer is what this post is about.


What “Load Capacity” Actually Means on a Deck

Every deck carries two kinds of weight. Dead load is the deck itself — frame, boards, balustrade, anything bolted down and never moving. Live load is everything you put on top — people, furniture, BBQ, planters, spa, pool. Australian Standard AS 1684 covers residential timber framing and sets minimum requirements for both.

For a standard residential deck, the rule of thumb is 1.5 kilopascals of distributed live load — roughly 150kg per square metre, spread evenly. That’s enough for a crowd of people standing shoulder to shoulder. It is not enough for a 350kg spa filled with water plus four occupants sitting in a 2m × 2m footprint. Point loads (heavy things concentrated in a small area) are where standard frames get into trouble.

The job of the builder is to look at what you actually want to put on the deck and design the frame to suit. Bearer size, joist size, joist centres, post spacing, and footing depth all get adjusted up from the standard residential baseline when the loads ask for it.

The Three Red Flags Worth Knowing Before You Plan Anything

Height, load, and soil. Those three factors decide whether a deck will hold what you want to put on it.

Height matters because a deck three steps off the ground behaves differently from a deck a metre up. The taller the structure, the more the posts have to resist sideways movement (bracing) and the more critical post-to-bearer connections become. Anything over a metre above natural ground level falls under different building code provisions and can trigger Development Application requirements.

Load is the obvious one. A 2m × 2.5m spa with cover and water and people typically lands around 1.5 to 2 tonnes sitting in a 5m² footprint. Standard residential framing isn’t built for that point-load concentration. Plunge pools, swim spas, fire pits with masonry surrounds, big concrete planters, outdoor pizza ovens — all of them need the frame designed around them, not the other way around.

Soil decides what the footings have to do. Eastern Suburbs sandstone is brilliant — solid base, fast to footing, predictable. Sand and reactive clay are different conversations. I’ve had jobs in lower-lying Sydney suburbs where the footing design changed completely once we got a geotechnical report. If a builder quotes a heavy-load deck without asking about ground conditions, that’s a conversation worth pausing.

My Own Deck Is Holding 11 Tonnes Every Summer

When my kids were young we bought them an above-ground pool. They last a few seasons then it’s time for an upgrade, so as the kids grew up so did the pool. We ended up with an 11m³ pool — big enough for the whole family. 11m³ of water translates into 11 tonnes. People are extra weight.

As a deck guy, I figured I should probably shore up some strength below an 11-tonne pool sitting on my own deck.

The original frame had bearers spaced 1600mm apart with 90×45mm joists running between them. That spec is fine for a normal residential live load — people, furniture, a BBQ. Not fine for 11 tonnes of water concentrated in one area. So I added one extra bearer between the existing ones under the pool footprint, which halved the joist span from 1600mm to 800mm. Same joist size, half the span, roughly four times the load-bearing capacity in that zone.

Many summers later, the pool goes up in spring, sits there through summer, comes down in autumn. No movement. No sag. No cracking. The deck doesn’t know it’s there once the frame is right.

That’s the principle for any heavy load on a deck: get the frame right and the rest follows. Try to retrofit later and you’re lifting boards.

The Spa Job I’m Finishing This Week

A client called about an old concrete spa in their courtyard. Broken, hadn’t been used in years, ugly to look at. The brief was to cover it. We could have just decked straight over the top — quick, cheap, would have looked fine for a year or two. We didn’t.

Instead we recommended building a sunken lounge into the existing pit. The concrete walls of the spa were structurally sound, so we used them as a containment box. Framed inside, clad the interior in hardwood, built bench seating around three sides with cushion storage underneath, dropped a fire pit on a pebble bed in the centre, and decked the lip flush with the surrounding paving so it reads as one continuous outdoor room.

Same footprint as a “just deck over it” job. Completely different outcome. The point isn’t that every spa pit should become a sunken lounge — it’s that load capacity isn’t just about what your deck can carry. It’s about what the structure underneath the deck is already capable of, and what you do with that.

What to Demand From Your Builder Before They Quote

If you’re planning to put anything heavy on your deck — pool, spa, planters bigger than a wheelbarrow, masonry fire pit, outdoor kitchen — these are the questions worth asking before you sign anything.

A good builder will already have answers to most of these before you ask. A builder who pauses on every question and reaches for the phone — that’s not necessarily a red flag, but it tells you they’re thinking it through rather than guessing. Guessing on load capacity is what causes the failures that show up two summers later.

When You Need a Structural Engineer

Most standard residential decks don’t need a structural engineer. AS 1684 covers the framing spec, the builder applies it, the deck is fine. But certain projects should go to an engineer regardless of how experienced the builder is.

  • Anything over about 2m × 2m for a spa — typical 2m × 2.5m spa I’m comfortable sizing the frame for off my own experience. Bigger than that, or swim spas, or plunge pools — engineer.
  • Pools (above-ground or semi-recessed) over 5,000 litres — water gets heavy fast. 5,000L = 5 tonnes. My own pool is 11m³ because it lives on my deck and comes down in winter. A permanent pool of that size on a deck would need engineer sign-off without question.
  • Roofed pergolas with significant wind load — uplift forces on a roof are a different design problem from gravity load.
  • Multi-level decks or decks supporting a structure above — load paths get complicated, get the engineer involved.
  • Anything where the soil is unknown or reactive — geotechnical report first, then engineer-designed footings.

My honest rule for clients: if you’re putting anything bigger than a 2m × 2.5m spa on a deck, my recommendation is a concrete slab under it with deck around. A spa that’s a permanent fixture deserves a permanent structural base. Decks are for furniture, planters, people, and seasonal loads. Once the load becomes permanent and significant, the deck isn’t fighting the right battle.

What Most People Get Wrong (and It’s Almost Always the Frame)

The single most common load-capacity mistake I see on other builders’ work is joist spacing. Joists at 600mm centres for a hardwood deck that should be at 450mm. Joists at 450mm under a board that needs 300mm. Joists running the wrong direction relative to the load they have to carry.

Joist spacing is the easiest defect to spot from above, but it’s rarely the only thing wrong. If the joists are wrong, almost everything underneath is wrong too — undersized bearers, posts too far apart, footings shallow, ledger boards bolted into rendered brick without flashing. The frame is a system. Get one element wrong and the whole system carries it.

This is why the question “can my deck hold a pool” is the wrong question to ask. The right question is “is the builder I’m hiring going to design the frame for what I want on the deck.” If the answer is yes, you’ll be fine. If the answer is “she’ll be right, mate” — get a different quote.

Get the frame right and the deck will hold whatever you ask of it. Get the frame wrong and the boards will tell you, one summer at a time.
