Composite vs Hardwood Decking: Real Cost Comparison
Upfront Cost: Hardwood Usually Wins
Standard Australian hardwoods like spotted gum and blackbutt typically cost less per square metre installed than composite decking. If upfront budget is the only factor, hardwood comes out ahead in most cases.
Composite’s Case: Long-Term Cost, Not Upfront Cost
Composite decking costs more to install but needs no oiling, staining, or sanding over its life. Hardwood needs re-oiling roughly every 12-18 months in Sydney’s UV and salt air conditions to stay protected — skip that and it greys, cracks, and splinters faster. Factor in a decade of maintenance products and your own time, and the total cost gap narrows significantly, sometimes closing altogether.
Lifespan Comparison
Well-maintained hardwood can last 25+ years. Neglected hardwood can start failing in under 10. Composite has a more predictable lifespan regardless of maintenance — most quality composite boards carry 25-year structural warranties from the manufacturer, because performance doesn’t depend on the homeowner keeping up an oiling schedule.
Where Each Makes Sense
Hardwood suits homeowners who want the natural timber look and don’t mind — or actively enjoy — the maintenance ritual. It’s also the better choice where board replacement might be needed later, since individual hardwood boards are simpler to source and swap.
Composite suits homeowners who want to install once and not think about it again, particularly for pool surrounds, rental properties, or anyone who travels and can’t maintain a regular oiling schedule.
Heat and Coastal Considerations
Darker composite boards can get noticeably hot underfoot in direct summer sun — worth considering for pool decks or northern exposure. Hardwood stays cooler but is more vulnerable to salt air degradation on exposed coastal blocks like Bondi, Bronte, or Coogee without consistent maintenance.
The Real Cost Question to Ask
Don’t compare hardwood vs composite on install price alone. Ask what the 10-year cost looks like including maintenance products, labour or your own time, and expected board replacement. That’s the number that actually matters for your budget.
The Decksmith’s Approach
The Decksmith installs both hardwood and composite decking across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, and will give you a straight comparison for your specific site and how you actually plan to use the deck — not a generic recommendation. Greg Weinbren, NSW Licence 272840C, works as lead carpenter on every build. Book a consultation to work out which makes sense for your budget over time, not just on day one.
