Durability Rating
Spotted gum is rated Class 1 durability, the highest rating for in-ground and above-ground timber use in Australian Standards. That makes it well suited to Sydney’s outdoor conditions, including coastal exposure, without chemical treatment.
Cost Position
Spotted gum sits mid-range among hardwood decking options — more than treated pine, generally less than premium species like ironbark or blackbutt select grade.
Maintenance Requirements
Like all hardwoods, spotted gum needs regular oiling — every 12-18 months in direct sun, less often in shaded areas — to maintain colour and prevent surface checking. Left untreated, it silvers to a grey patina over time, which some homeowners prefer.
