Standard Australian hardwoods like spotted gum and blackbutt typically cost less per square metre installed than composite decking. If upfront budget is the only factor, hardwood comes out ahead in most cases.

Composite decking costs more to install but needs no oiling, staining, or sanding over its life. Hardwood needs re-oiling roughly every 12-18 months in Sydney’s UV and salt air conditions to stay protected — skip that and it greys, cracks, and splinters faster. Factor in a decade of maintenance products and your own time, and the total cost gap narrows significantly, sometimes closing altogether.
Lifespan Comparison
Well-maintained hardwood can last 25+ years. Neglected hardwood can start failing in under 10. Composite has a more predictable lifespan regardless of maintenance — most quality composite boards carry 25-year structural warranties from the manufacturer, because performance doesn’t depend on the homeowner keeping up an oiling schedule.
