Coastal Deck Framing in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs
On Eastern Suburbs coastal decks, the boards are what people notice first. The frame is what fails first. Salt air, trapped moisture, and low clearances chew through timber structure long before the top surface looks finished.
I strip decks from Clovelly to Bondi and Maroubra where the surface still looked serviceable — and the joist tops were cooked. This is not a care-and-maintenance lecture. It is what I change in framing, fixings, and board choice when the site sits near the water.
If the frame is gone, new boards are a short delay — not a fix.
Why coastal decks fail at the frame
Coastal Eastern Suburbs sites stack problems: airborne salt, wind-driven rain, and decks built tight to paving or garden where air cannot move under the structure. Joist tops hold moisture under the boards. Bearer ends and post bases stay damp. Fixings corrode and then the timber around them softens.
By the time soft spots show underfoot, I am usually looking past the boards. That triage is the same story I walk through in when a Sydney timber deck is past saving.
What I change on framing and fixings near the water
- Treated members and detailing suited to the exposure — not the cheapest stick that fits
- Sealed cuts and stainless where salt air will find every shortcut
- Clearance and drainage so the frame can dry — low decks need more care, not less
- Joist protection and bearing details that do not trap water against the timber
On some sites aluminium subframe systems earn their keep. On others a properly detailed timber frame is still the right answer. The site decides — not a brand brochure.

When composite helps (and when it does not)
Composite and premium boards like Millboard take coastal weathering better than tired hardwood on a cooked frame — but they still need a structure worth standing on. Composite does not rescue a rotten subframe. It rewards a frame done properly.
